COVID & Sports

The recent epidemic has effected all of us in similar, and different ways. Along with daily routines such as shopping, work, recreation – an obvious demographic being effected by this, people who exercise, play sports and sports viewers. Throughout this time we’ve seen closings, delays, and questions regarding exercise. Will there be a shift in pro sports culture? Are gyms safe to return to? Should skateparks be sandbagged? These questions along with many others have no answers other than time – but that doesn’t stop public opinion from quite literally entering the conversation.

Humans live in community based societies, therefor, the voices of those around you (whether you’re fond of them or not) matter. I conducted an interview with Anthony Deponte, a student at Southern Connecticut State University and avid sports fan. I asked some questions in regards to pro sports, shutdowns, and returning to normalcy.

“Having fans in the stadium drives paying salaries for players… the way they do that is through ticket prices… Fans are important to the economical decision making in sports.”
“A lot of people spend so much of their time dedicated to their craft in sports… if some of them stop playing (due to this) it will feel like a waste of time.”

E-Sports has been budding in popularity over the last few years. Due to the rise in many “celebrity gamers”, watching others compete in E-Sports games, tournaments, etc. has generated mass amounts of attention and revenue to the once laughed at sport. One of the more relevant game systems today, the Nintendo Switch, has been quite popular since it’s initial release in March 2017 – but due to quarantine many are rushing to sold out stores in an attempt to purchase this item. The chart below displays the number of Nintendo Switch units sold it’s opening month, holiday season of this past year (December), and then March 2020, when the world is in the middle of a mass quarantine.

The Wailers Stop at SCSU

The Wailers are a reggae band led by Aston Barrett. ‘The Wailers’ have members from Bob Marley’s old band, Bob Marley and The Wailers. When Marley passed in 1981, Barrett, a close friend, made a promise to keep his spirit alive through music. Today, The Wailers tour the globe, spreading the spirit of peace, reggae, and Bob Marley through live performance. They will be preforming at Southern Connecticut State University’s annual Spring concert on April 30th at 5pm. To view the full catalogue of The Wailers’ music click here.

Chart Excercise (III)

I purposely chose the countries I did because I feel as if they are the “leaders” of their respective continents. A fact about the United States is they use an estimated 18% of the worlds energy. 65% of the highways in Germany have no speed limit. Japan consists of 6,852 islands. Lagos, Nigeria is not only the largest city on the African continent, but also the fastest growing in the world. Approximately 15% of Brazil’s population is claimed to have Italian ancestry, this dates back to the initial waves of emigration from Europe to the Americas in the 20th century.
